Special Education

The Special Education Needs Unit serves students, parents and teachers of both public and private schools. It is directed by Education Officer-Special Needs, Ms. Joy-Ann P. Harrigan. The unit is served by a team of 12 teachers who conduct assessments every Wednesday.

The Unit provides informal assessments for students who have been identified as having challanges working with the regular school curriculum and environment. The reports from the assessment is presented to the parents(s) who is a critical component in the assessment process. The report provides suggestions, for both parent and teacher, on how the child learns best, along with strategies and concept guides for building on what  the child already knows. We offer guidance to teachers who needs assistance in teaching students with special needs, and to parents who need help with structuring at home for their special child. We also provide guide for the counsellors who are working with special need students in the schools. The unit also does schools visits and observations with the aim of providing support for students and teachers.
